Another short story with three suspects, all who have had their debts called in by an insidious loan shark. Ellery is asked to clear the name and reputation of a hard-working man who took out a loan so that his daughter would not be institutionalized. The other suspects are a cleaning woman and an Italian barber. Turns out the culprit was another cleaning woman, the one who found the body. Ellery quickly mops up the case, as “Sergeant Velie remarked with some bitterness too no one in particular, ‘And the beauty of it is, he does it all with his little sleeves rolled up.’”
