This story has Ellery once again helping out government agents. They’ve replaced a tobacconist with a similar looking agent, who winds up dead. Smoked, as it were. A clue is left, which shows an incredible amount of non-linear thinking breathing their last, but, of course, Ellery puts II and II together, and solves the mystery.
