Lousy original title in This Week, March 25, 1951, more clever title in QBI: “Murder Dept: Driver’s Seat.”
Again, three suspects, and without even meeting them, Ellery solves the mystery, and asks, “By the way, Dad, what’s he look like?”
But the point of the story isn’t so much the mystery (which is dated: current motor vehicle laws would negate the underpinnings of this case), but the character of the victim. Daisy Brothers met her future husband in a strip club, only to be snubbed by the rest of his family. He dies, and she outwits her brothers-in-law in a hostile take-over of the family business. And she does it beautifully. Really, I was cheering for her during that scene!
