This Week, June 18,1950 included the short story “Love Hunts a Hidden Treasure,” reprinted in QBI as “Buried Treasure Department: Miser’s Gold.” This time around, the heirs to a fortune in a pawnshop have to find it, in a twist on Queen’s dying clue motif. The clue to the missing $4 million can be found in the titles in the O. Henry collection, The Four Million. Here’s another clue: the title has nothing to do with gold, or money, but Ellery makes a connection, anyhow.
I wonder if the cousins, by this point, were writing these very short short stories in their sleep. Perhaps the similarity with “The Lady Couldn’t Explain” is the reason the latter was not reprinted in QBI.
